 One of the greatest things that we could do in life is to tour countries. So if you’re a passionate devotee of Zen, it is a must that the Golden Pavillion Temple must be included in your itinerary.

This temple was originally built in 1397 to become a retirement villa for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, as a part of his estate then known as Kitayama. It was his son who renewed the building into a Zen sanctuary of the school of Rinzai. The temple was burned down twice during the Nin War.

The Golden Pavillion, or Kinkaku, is a building with three stories on the grounds of the temple. The top two stories of the pavilion are shrouded with genuine gold leaf. The pavilion also functions as a shariden, housing remnants of Buddha (Buddha’s Ashes). And the edifice is frequently contrasted or linked the Silver Pavillion Temple, the Ginkaku-ji, and it is located also in Kyoto.

Golden Pavillion is placed in a magnificent Japanese strolling garden (kaiy-shiki). The pond in the facade is called Kyko-chi (Mirror Pond). There are many stones and islands on the pond that signify the story of the Buddhist creation.

In the year 1950, the Golden pavillion was burned down by a monk, who then attempted to end his life on Daimon-ji hill that is behind the building. He survived, however during the investigation after the arrest of the monk, his mother called in to talk with the police; on her way home, she ended her life by leaping from her train to a river valley.

The monk was sentenced to seven years in prison; he pass away because of an illness during his incarceration in 1956. At that historical moment, the statue of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu was burned. A fictional version of those events could be read at the center of Yukio Mishima’s 1956 book The Temple of the Golden Pavillion.
