 Antwerp is the second largest city of Belgium. The capital city of the province of Antwerp, it is also the second largest harbor in Europe after Rotterdam. The city went through a low phase economically during the Reformation period and the subsequent conflict between the Catholics and the Protestants. As times passed, Antwerp went on to progress and became what it is today-the tenth largest port in the world.

The Antwerp’s Grote Markt (town square) is the wonder of the 16th century architecture. The Stadhuis (town hall) is a popular Flemish Gothic structure built in the Renaissance fashion. In the middle of the town square lies a statue of the first hero of Antwerp Brabo. If you are buying a new car with a super service record over many years, such as a Toyota Camry, you might think there is no need for an extended warranty. Of course, statistics deal with averages, medians or means, and you could instead fall at either end of quite a long, large curve. Yes, your risk for non-warranty problems might be less on the Camry, but this was thought true of all Toyotas until they recalled millions of different vehicles in late 2009 and early 2010.

Despite the fact that these recalls cost most owners nothing, Toyota owners who had problems after their warranties expired, but before the recalls were announced, had to shell out their own money. If you can’t trust Toyota on build quality, you need to revisit all your assumptions about extended warranties. All people have their own tastes in cars, trucks, vans and motorcycles, and the plain fact is that some vehicles need more service, including some very specialized services, than others do. This means you won’t get an answer about your needs for an extended warranty without doing your homework, which at the very least means checking out various consumer reporting services concerning the vehicles you are considering. This will at least give you an idea as to the cars requiring more protection on an extended warranty, rather than less. It is that simple. The more you know, the more nuanced and precise your decision can be.

Other used car issues

The main thing to remember about used cars is not that they are used, but that you don’t know precisely how they were used. You can never really tell how previous owners treated the vehicle, whether it was a “beater” or even if the “service records” in the glove box really belong to it. For a used BMW 750Li, which will set you back between $40-60,000 if it’s within a few years of new, the added cost of the extended warranty makes good sense. It is very costly to service this car and keep it running right. Still the flagship of the BMW line (although the engine is now six liters, yielding a 760 nameplate) the 750Li is gorgeous, classy and powerful, but an oil change can cost almost $300.

With all the electronic gadgets and computer-controlled gizmos in the Big Beemer, it is a perfect candidate for an extended warranty. The Thais use first and last names in the same way we do, but often they have so many syllables that it is very difficult for us to pronounce them and even more difficult to remember.

It was not always like that. In earlier times names in Thailand used to be shorter and easier. It is a fairly recent phenomenon that those never-ending names are in vogue. This went so far that the Thais felt compelled to pass a law that limits the number of syllables names can contain. This prevented the multi syllable name game from making legal transactions unmanageable. Thai law makes if fairly simple to change your name. Dont like it, no problem, pick another one. A simple application will do it.

When someone gives me one of those complicated names, I just ask them for a shorter name. Fortunately most Thais use abbreviations of their real name or nicknames which are at the other end of the spectrum of the multi syllable confusion. In contrast they typically consist of just one syllable or letter. In some cases the Thais pick any one syllable of their legal name and use that as their nickname - it may be the first, last, or middle syllable, it does not matter. Some nicknames appear quite strange to us. There is Ms Pig, Mr. Buffalo, Mr. Dog, or Ms Bomb. How do they come up with those names? Here are the actual stories of friends of mine here in Thailand.

And so the villagers figured if they would call him “buffalo”, then the spirit of such a strong animal would help him. There is even a saying strong as a buffalo. And in this case it turned out to be his cure, his maladies disappeared and he is convinced that the name saved him. But you really have to know the story behind the name since buffalo in Thailand can also be an insult. Buffaloes are regarded as stupid and low brained. Unless a special context exists, calling people “buffalo” will get you into trouble very quickly.

Some nicknames are descriptive in a colorful way. The nickname of another friend of mine is: Green . She ended up with this name since as a baby she supposedly had a greenish complexion, and that became her name. Now, 40 years later, she definitely lost her greenish complexion but not her nickname.

She had been trying to find a good nickname, and so she named the baby “bomb”, a name which he still has twenty years later.

Not all nicknames are that graphic. Many are just single letters like O, or E, or B. More recently it has become fashionable to use western names like cat or joy as nicknames, provided they consist of just one syllable.

Some Thais do not use nicknames, but they are in the minority. When you meet Thais, they will usually introduce themselves with their nicknames. Although some of these nicknames appear strange to us, we should count our blessings, since we would have a serious challenge trying to understand or remember those mile-long legal names which are so typical in Thailand.

In fact, divers are not allowed to bring their own equipment for the fear of contaminating the marine tank. Even jewelry must be removed prior to the dive. Scuba wetsuits (shorties), BCs, regulators, fins, booties and masks are provided. Divers are allowed to bring and use their own masks and bathing suits but these are the only exceptions to the rule.

After the facility tour, wetsuits and towels for each diver are already waiting in private stalls that include private showers in the change rooms. The setup is well organized but a bit odd because after changing into wetsuits, the divers are paraded through the public areas where the other Epcot guests are before going into the main level of the marine tank. Once at the marine tank, divemasters are waiting with tanks and BCs already assembled for each diver. The BCs are weight integrated with more weight than needed and the only gauge attached is an air pressure gauge. There isn’t even a depth gauge or octopus second stage as they are not considered necessary for this shallow dive. After the dive briefing, the divemasters help the divers with their equipment on and everyone moves to a descent line at the middle of the tank.

The dive itself is usually beyond most divers’ expectations. There is a lot of marine life in this tank including sharks, rays, turtles and lots of Caribbean fish of all sizes. In fact, the staff claims that divers will see more variety of Caribbean marine life during this one dive than many dives combined out in the open sea. One of the neat things that divers can do on this dive that they can’t do elsewhere is interact with the public Epcot guests. There are sixty observation windows all around the marine tank including views from the main restaurant.
